Alex Yu
Collaborative Pianist
Alex Yu is a versatile musician who embraces a career as a clarinetist, recorder player, pianist, and conductor. Currently based in New York, Alex has been featured in the Lex54 Concerts Series, 92nd Street Y Concert Series, Shelter Island Friends of Music, Kayenta Center for the Arts, Gotham Early Music Scene and Long Island Composers’ Alliance Concerts, He has served as principal clarinetist in the Long Island Festival Orchestra and Park Avenue Chamber Symphony, and in June 2025 performed as a soloist with the New Amsterdam Symphony Orchestra. Alex holds music degrees from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and Aaron Copland School of Music, Queens College. He has served as adjunct faculty in clarinet at Queens College and given masterclasses at Southern Utah University and Utah Tech University.
Alex began playing the piano at age four and has been a piano teacher for over thirty years. He is thrilled to join the Suzuki on the Island as collaborative pianist. Alex’s twin sons, Andrew and Matthew, have been violin students at SOTI since 2022 studying under Amelia Dietrich.
