Suzuki on the Island is one of the most reputable Suzuki music programs in Long Island, New York.  The program was founded in 2000 by director Ani Gregorian Resnick, an experienced Suzuki teacher and accomplished violinist who has performed throughout the United States and in Europe. Mrs. Resnick, a graduate of The Juilliard School, is the former director of the North Shore Performing Arts Academy Suzuki Program.

Suzuki on the Island currently offers violin, viola, cello and piano lessons and accepts students as young as three to four years old.  Following the tradition of the Suzuki method, Suzuki on the Island provides students with weekly private and group lessons taught by members of our outstanding faculty, all of whom hold degrees from leading music schools and conservatories such as The Juilliard School.  The children participate in a variety of performances throughout the year including solo recitals, group concerts, master classes and several outreach performances at Old Westbury Gardens.  Suzuki on the Island is made up of very talented and dedicated young musicians who regularly receive recognition for their high performance achievements.

The Suzuki approach deals with much more than teaching a child how to play an instrument.  It seeks to nurture the whole child, to help unfold his or her natural potential to learn through music making.  Often, this experience leads to continuing on the instrument and achieving an advanced level of study.  At times, Suzuki students go on to perform professionally and to pursue musical performance careers. Through the Suzuki growing process, children thrive in a total environment of support and encouragement.  They develop confidence and build self esteem.

It is an increasingly known phenomenon that music and, more specifically, stringed instrument study, enhances learning receptivity and capability in other areas of learning. When caught during the known "window of opportunity," children before the age of ten are prime candidates for developing those areas of the brain that, through musical study, activate the entire learning and cognitive process.  Through participation in the offerings of  Suzuki on the Island, every child has the opportunity to tap these resources within themselves.

Parents are integrally involved with their child's progress and development.  In what is known as the "learning triangle," parents attend lessons and, by recording the lessons or taking notes, are able to help their child during home practice sessions to follow through with important skills and concepts taught at the lessons.  Under the teacher's expert guidance, skill development is enhanced in this way.

Suzuki on the Island affords children and their families a unique opportunity to learn and grow musically and culturally.  In a mutually satisfying way, skills and music making are taught, learned and shared.  In a step-by-step process, the best is brought out of each child.  By laying a firm foundation, as Dr. Suzuki said, "the seed can grow and blossom."
